Television Interference Chart
Wind turbines and wind farms can affect terrestrial television reception. Planning authorities usually require a legally binding commitment, under section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 or Section 75 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1997.
The first step to analyse the effects is to identify areas that may be affected. This is usually undertaken by comparing the direct signals from the TV transmitter to receivers (Carrier) to the indirect signals passing through the wind turbines to (Interference). This is measured in the form of Carrier to Interference Ratio (CIR).
Television (TV) Interference Chart will show the predicted levels of CIR caused by the proposed wind turbine(s) for a specific TV transmitter. You can assess an area of up to 20x20km.
The Carrier to Inference Ratio (CIR) is interpreted into 3 interference bands:
CIR < 5 High / Interference Likely
CIR 5 – 15 Medium / Interference Possible
CIR 15 – 25 Low / Interference Unlikely
The provided chart will identify areas where effects are likely, possible and unlikely. The results are used to identify areas where a Television Reception Survey (Baseline Survey or Post Construction Survey) is required.
